Despite its showy title the book is in fact a very serious double biography of two creative geniuses.
There’s something for everyone : Spontaneous, true to life memories of the great Palace years, a kind of parallel with the Studio 54 that we all dreamed of. That was pre-AIDS totally crazy Party, Party time. Life was freer then, if only in the way we dressed to go out, before Tom Ford dictated to us that it had to be chic or leather …..
Then there’s a wonderful warning to youngsters of the dangers of drugs, particularly cocaine which can lead to anything.
But the greatest message is doubtless the invitation to open up to all types of movements: new art forms, art deco, every trend from the 18th and 19th centuries, the wealth of drawings from Japan, China, Germany, Morocco ……
The beauty and diversity of textile and decorative materials.
A great lesson for our times, smothered as we are by military conformism.
Despite her relentless desire to remain impartial, one feels that the author has a weakness for Saint Laurent. And it’s almost the reverse effect that actually happens.
Take a look too at the relentless drive of these two giants of fashion who demanded of themselves the strictest rigour for total excellence, plus their very different but converging feelings for business and money.
