Perrotain Gallery

On November 6, the Perrotain Gallery presented Kaws at an extreme opening where two distinct categories of guest were…mingling. On the one hand the Gotha of the contemporary art world and on the other, the graffiti author’s buddies and groupies who were definitely not dressed in local colors, which made them truly charming. This second category somewhat frightened the Perrotain staff due to their seated rather than zapping behavior.
I called him an author because the great debate was, for the first category mentioned, whether or not he is a genuine artist. Behind this discussion of purity hides another, more earthbound topic. Is he really an artist because if not, the person who’s investing the required $40,000 won’t make any money out of it…
Like me, you don’t care two hoots. His work is good and quite essential, which proves that this artist has surpassed the stage of street or not street. We are discovering something new, especially in his last creations which represent a mutation towards the artist’s more subtle and personal world.
Godspeed!
